Yippee!! I finally did it…..2017 has definitely been a year of too many firsts for me and in today’s case, my very first wedding cake order.

Over the past few months, I have turned down numerous offers to do wedding cakes and mostly because I was always too scared and worried that something might go wrong (blame it on those wedding cake fail videos on Youtube), but hey, there is always a first time for everything and this was it for me. It was also one of those defying moments where I needed to Let Go of my fears and Let God.

When I got the call to do this particular Wedding Cake, I was ready with my usual answers (a.k.a flimsy excuses)…… ‘‘Aaaah, I would love to but am not ready, I haven’t done a wedding cake before, I haven’t used plastic icing aka fondant before, I only use whipping cream for frosting, I might be busy that weekend, I know someone who does amazing wedding cakes…….blah blah blah’’. But the client was not having any of it; I could see her rolling her eyes at me saying ‘‘you aren’t running away from this one young lady! Blah Blah Blah…..sitaki kusikia…Lol’’! And that is how I said yes to my first wedding cake order.

Luckily for me, the order had been made pretty early so I had enough time to deal with my mini panic attacks and worries and to also Google myself to sleep on a daily basis looking at ideas and also at first wedding cake order fails (the devil is a liar – the horrendous ideas and fears he puts in our heads). A week to the wedding, I was surprisingly calm and collected – told you, Let Go and Let God. I started baking the cakes on Wednesday night and was done by Thursday evening thus had all of Friday to do the cake decoration bit. Woke up so excited on Friday morning, I started decorating the cakes at around 6.00 a.m. and I could have sworn that I had worked with Fondant in another life – I was enjoying it too much for a first timer – contrary to what I was expecting.

The theme colours for the wedding were royal blue and white so I needed to ensure that the cake stays in line with the theme of the day. I also settled on simple decoration designs that would be elegant yet fail proof – almost! I used ribbons, fondant cut outs, fresh flowers and a wedding cake topper for decoration and it turned out quite well – I was really pleased with the outcome despite my OCD tendencies that kick in every once in a while.

On Saturday morning, I was ready and set to go by 8.00 a.m. (excitement galore) but ended up leaving the house at 1.00 p.m. as per the client’s wish which was pretty okay since the venue was less than 20 minutes away and the set up wouldn’t take more than 30 minutes. Once we got to the venue, my dear Mum and Sister were there to celebrate their girl’s first wedding cake order and also helped out with the cake set up and we were done by 2.00 p.m. (phew!).

Once done, I took a step back to look at the wedding cake and I was so pleased – pleased that I had gotten over my wedding cakes fears, pleased that the cakes got to the venue in perfect condition, pleased that I had done my first stacked cake, pleased that I had finally used plastic icing and on 9 cakes, pleased that the cake looked that beautiful, pleased that the wedding guests were giving me all sorts of compliments and taking pictures, pleased that I had successfully managed to do my very first wedding cake and most importantly, pleased that I had trusted God with my fears and doubts and he had come through for me….boy was I pleased…couldn’t stop smiling.

I now look forward to accepting wedding cake orders and to also challenging myself to try new designs and ideas – goodbye wedding cake fears!

Congratulations Mr and Mrs Kimani, May God bless your marriage and shower you with his blessings. And to Mrs. Grace Wahinya, thank you for believing in me and for trusting me with this wedding cake order – my very first – thank you!
