As the year 2017 drew to a close, I couldn’t help but look back at it with a smile and so much gratitude. 2017 was an amazing year for Sally’s Kitchen and I simply cannot thank God enough.
One, the clientele base grew so much, the feedback and reviews were really great, I did my very first wedding cake in October and a second one followed shortly after in late November, I faced my cake related fears (Yes, there is such a thing…Lol) and finally, I introduced new cake flavours namely; Black Forest, White Forest, Blueberry Forest and Red Velvet.
And this is what inspired me to come up with a list of my favourite cakes from 2017; some really gave me mini panic attacks and some were a bit easy but turned out so beautifully. And without further ado, let’s get into it.
CAKE NUMBER 1: BABY MEAGAN’S FIRST BIRTHDAY CAKE
I have always had a thing for first birthday cake orders because I know how special they are to parents. Baby Meagan is the latest addition to our extended family and I had been looking forward to her first birthday so eagerly. The cake was a 3.5 kg cake with the first tier being a strawberry cake, second tier was pineapple and the bottom tier was an orange flavored. I remember taking a step back to stare at this cake – it turned out quite well.
CAKE NUMBER 2: BABY ARIA’S BIRTHDAY CAKE
I really loved how this 1.5 KG Black Forest Birthday Cake turned out. The chocolate cage, strawberries and fondant cut outs came together beautifully.
CAKE NUMBER 3: MY VERY FIRST WEDDING CAKE
Then there was this gorgeous 10 kg wedding cake that got me to face my wedding cake fears (It was time). You can read about my experience with this cake HERE.
CAKE NUMBER 4: THE PINK GRADUATION CAKE
This was probably the fourth time I was doing a stacked cake and I am getting more confident with it and hopefully I get to do many more in 2018. The client is probably one of the sweetest I have come across and she really loved her first cake (Same design, but in purple) – so much that she ordered a second one in pink.
CAKE NUMBER 5: THE SECOND WEDDING CAKE ORDER
A few weeks after the first wedding cake, I got a call to do another wedding cake (See what happens when you let go of your fears?). Only difference is that I was a bit more confident this time round though the notice was a bit too short but God made it possible. The cake was 9 kgs and the theme colour was surprisingly the same as the first wedding cake but at least there was some red involved in this one.
CAKE NUMBER 6: THE YELLOW BABY SHOWER CUPCAKES
I did these lovely baby shower themed cupcakes for a very dear friend of mine sometime last year and they turned out so beautifully. The cupcakes were orange flavored with non-edible baby shower themed cupcake toppers that I got online and some Wilton flower themed cupcake wrappers.
CAKE NUMBER 7: MEL’S GRADUATION THEMED CUPCAKES
Little sister (Not so little anymore) graduated in December and I wanted to do some graduation themed cupcakes for the set up. These were passion flavoured with whipped cream frosting, some red fondant cut out flowers and non-edible graduation themed cupcake toppers that I got online. I really love how these cupcakes turned out.
CAKE NUMBER 8: THE PINK GRANDMA’S BIRTHDAY CAKE
There was a lot of Grandma love going round in December – did quite a number of them but really loved how this pink one turned out. This was a 1kg orange cake with whipped cream frosting and fondant cut outs.
CAKE NUMBER 9: THE ASSORTED FLAVOURS CUPCAKES
I always find myself smiling at these cupcakes – they turned out great. I was playing around with some new cake flavours I had bought and I was not disappointed. The green ones were Apple Green flavoured, the yellow ones were Mango flavoured and the cream ones were Butterscotch flavoured.
CAKE NUMBER 10: THE PINK AND BLUE POLKA DOT BABY SHOWER CAKE
Then there was this 1.5 kg orange cake I did towards the end of the year. The polka dots and edible baby booties really brought some pretty simple but lovely effect to the cake. And oh, the client was so very happy with it.
CAKE NUMBER 11: THE YELLOW FAREWELL CAKE
A childhood friend of mine needed a simple set up and a farewell party cake for a colleague of hers and it was so simple but I found it quite beautiful.
CAKE NUMBER 12: THE PINK PINA-COLADA CAKE
The fresh strawberries and pineapples on this 1 kg had me sold – it looked so gorgeous.
And we are done, so those are my 2017 favourites. I cannot wait to see what this new year will be like.
I would love to hear from you in the comments section below, which is your favourite from that list and why? 🙂
Thank you for taking time to read this.
